REVIEW OF CHAPTER 5 OF A BOOK

THE CHAPTER TITTLE: The potential uses of ICTs for sustainable development

The chapter highlights some of the more advanced ICT applications that are the development phase. In some cases, these are being implemented in the industrialized Countries and in some of the wealthier and large developing countries. With appropriate policies and ICT strategies these application could become available to all developing countries. To a limited extent, they are already in use to strengthen the prospects for sustainable development.

The review focuses on applications that are facilitating public and private services in public administration, urban and rural development, and transport sector [section 5.2]. section 5.3addresses the potential benefits of ICTs in improving the quality of life for citizens, especially in the health, special needs , education environment, and agriculture sector. Section 5.4 turns to the roles of ICT in improving access to public information. Section 5.5 examines the application of ICT in transportation of business sector and in such areas as manufacturing, electronic commerce, and travels and tourism industry. Section 5.6 concludes with an overview of the potential social and economic impact of the new applications and considers the extent to which these potentials might be turned into a realty for the developing countries.
